In the spring of 1965, an extension committee consisting of Harold Kuwahara, Tony Taniguchi, Akira Watanabe and Harry Sato of the Hilo Jaycees set out to organize a new Jaycee chapter. On May 25, 1965 the Lehua Jaycees organization was born. Ted Ura who was our charter president instilled many of the beliefs that make the Lehua Jaycees what it is today. Since then, Lehua Jaycees has takened great strides to emerge as one of Hilo's most active Jaycee chapters. Today, the chapter runs an average of 40-60 projects during the year which seeks to meet the needs of the community and its chapter members. In 1978, Carl Okuyama chaired the first Fourth Fest which consisted of Forth of July Fireworks and the Carol Kai Bed Race. In 1985 the Lehua Jaycees inherited the Downtown Hilo Christmas Parade, chaired by Joslyn Tamura, when the Mauna Kea Jaycees gave it up. In 1989, Richard Onishi, organized and chaired the first SpringFest Carnival. |
